This guy is totally oversimplifying christiannity as some atheists do.
I would tell him: "Learn a little about religion even if you don't believe in it."
The phrase that appears about one second with his "100 suns" thing is total (add word of your choice here).
Also, he is using very basic manipulation process. Let me explain. The title of this video is "Atheism: the Stars are on our side". Then, he show the number of star in the universe, which is a huge number.
By doing so, he give an impression of a huge support for in fact a very weak theory, since God could as well have made that much of star for, I don't know, show his might or something to future generation.
And then again, he accuse the christianity to not have proof, while having none at all.
Also, everyone wants to have the very one religion in the world? Ah, those day people would do anything to looks different than the rest of the world.
Lol, and then again, he use a mathematical formula to analyze a obviously poetic text, to absolutely not take litteraly. All priest will tell you that you can't take sentence of the bible and apply them directly. You must find your own meaning to the bible.
Even a 12 year old know that. So yes, I can totally deny while using the obvious argument he predicted, since his answer to this at 7:00 made no sense at all, he just tried to hide the flaw in is reasonment.
I stopped the video here since, well, it's kinda late :3
And mmhhh sorry for being rude. I don't mind atheist, I just hate poor argument.
I kind of agree with Cynthia, but i also recognise that some times certain things have to be mentioned, because whatever you believe that its being taken to literally and that it isn't worth it to refute with math, i can assure you that there is a bunch of people around the world that do literally believe everything the bible says, not only that, but they also push it or try to, on everyone they can.
nope, i really don't mind it. in fact you're the first person to post a long message here. lol
i'll try to explain what he meant as far as i can: "Also, he is using very basic manipulation process. Let me explain. The title of this video is "Atheism: the Stars are on our side". By doing so, he give an impression of a huge support for in fact a very weak theory, since God could as well have made that much of star for, I don't know, show his might or something to future generation."
agreed that it's not a very strong argument but he's not actually using the word support here as in the support you get with a million friend.
"Also, everyone wants to have the very one religion in the world?" of course, christians wants no-christian to convert in their own belief. especially those group who have little amount of followers. and the muslims, yeah, it's either you convert or die.
"All priest will tell you that you can't take sentence of the bible and apply them directly. You must find your own meaning to the bible."
see, this is when all things fail. the reason why there are so many branches of christianity right now is because everyone have their own interpretation of the bible. try asking the head of their religion if they are the real religion and they'll tell you that they are. that others are fraud and only using god for their own gain.
"of course, christians wants no-christian to convert in their own belief. especially those group who have little amount of followers. and the muslims, yeah, it's either you convert or die."
Atheists too want people to convert in their own belief. Why do you think this guys putted this video online? In order to convert people to his own belief. Then again, it's not all atheist, nor it is all christian or any other belief that is the worse.
The belief in itself is harmless: it's all up to the individual natural personnality and life choice. I think this also anwser Nigma objection.
"see, this is when all things fail. the reason why there are so many branches of christianity right now is because everyone have their own interpretation of the bible. try asking the head of their religion if they are the real religion and they'll tell you that they are. that others are fraud and only using god for their own gain."
I often disscussed with my father about that, since he's an active catholic. He used to tell: "Oh, I'm not saying I'm more right than them, I just think than christianny is a well balanced religion and help you make good choices. They might be as, or even more right than me. This is not the issue."
It's just an exemple, but it shows again than it's up to the personnal character. He's a science teacher btw, so he's not exactly your typical dumb redneck =P
"Why do you think this guys putted this video online?"
explaining atheism is not the same as convincing people to accept religion. atheism doesn't follow a dogma after all.
"I often disscussed with my father about that, since he's an active catholic. He used to tell: "Oh, I'm not saying I'm more right than them, I just think than christianny is a well balanced religion and help you make good choices. They might be as, or even more right than me. This is not the issue.""
that doesn't sound right. how come it's not the issue. what about those "christian" and their "pastor" who goes around parading the the signboard saying those soldier who died in iraq deserves to die? how about the murders committed by a religious group because of dispute with another religious group over the matter who has the right interpretation of the bible? and they're both christians! these branches of christianity are always accusing the other that they're wrong and their own beliefs are right. how can that be balance? how can it help you make the right choice? and if they are right then he was wrong, shouldn't he worry? according to the bible there are tons of false prophet and they will lead you directly to hell.
"explaining atheism is not the same as convincing people to accept religion. atheism doesn't follow a dogma after all."
Atheist are really trying to put themselves aside other religious beliefs, but I think they're quite similar: it's some kind of faith. Yeah, I said faith: the faith God doesn't exist.
Since it is impossible to prove that God doesn't exist, it's correct to use this word.
Even agnosticism has it's share of faith. You can't have a perfectly rationnal position in a spiritual matter.
And for "atheism doesn't follow a dogma after all.", I don't really buy that. Atheism will do the very clear statement: "God doesn't exist". Although they don't have an organisation like religion, which is the main difference, this common belief statement repeated by all atheists can be associated with an underlying dogma.
I will repeat it: atheism isn't that much different as religion. Even watching this very video can be compared as going to the church.
And for your last argument, I would say than all of this is pure human stupidity in which religion is only an excuse to exhibit proudly this stupidity.
Sadly, I'll admit it often happens. People just are control freak and will join a religion only to "gain some kind of power". Which is the power to claim they are victim of religious segregation if someone point out this very stupidity.
But this is absolutely not what religion is all about, and you shouldn't base your judgement on religion only on their stupidest members.
There's also a bunch of atheist retards who burn churches and such, I'll remind you =P
I'm completely behind Naj on this one. I think Cynthia needs to learn and understand Atheism a bit better. A true Atheist fights with logic, Atheists become Atheist because they come to realize the folly of religion. A person who claims he is an Atheist but does things such as burn churches as she suggests is not a true Atheist.
Also, watching a video on Atheism is like going to church? That doesn't even make any sense. And to be honest, when I look at the smartest members of a religion, I generally see manipulators and con-men.
Since I have two opponent here, I'll take the liberty to make another answer. Sigh, religious debate are always like that =P
"clearly you don't understand atheism"
Be clear, what doesn't I understand? This isn't an argument here.
Isn't atheism: "in a broad sense, is the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist."
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism
It's just as I said. Faith in the position that there are no deities, thus implying rejection of belief in the existence of deities. The last sentence doesn't really concern us here, since I guess it's only for those who never heard about any religion (correct me if I'm wrong).
I'm absolutely not taking back the word faith here.
"i don't believe that one person can convert another into atheism."
That won't keep some people from trying.
"and your argument about the existence of god, that only applies to agnostics like you."
It is indeed from agnostic belief. But why wouldn't it apply to everyone? Prove me wrong.
Then David:
"A true Atheist fights with logic, Atheists become Atheist because they come to realize the folly of religion."
It is only your personal view here. A lot of people become atheist for sentimental reason after period of suffering in their life.
"A person who claims he is an Atheist but does things such as burn churches as she suggests is not a true Atheist."
Yes. Yes he is.
Let me go back to the definition:
"Atheism, in a broad sense, is the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist. Atheism is contrasted with theism, which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists."
Do I see something excluding asshole burning churches? Mmhhhh, no. Definitely not.
"Also, watching a video on Atheism is like going to church? That doesn't even make any sense. "
One of the main goal of going to church is to strengten and maintain faith. It's also a goal here, even if you'll certainly deny it.
"And to be honest, when I look at the smartest members of a religion, I generally see manipulators and con-men."
Here, are you fighting with logic, as you claimed before? Mmhhh, maybe a little, but I can perceive a little feeling here huh?
Also, please state some sources in order to support this affirmation.
NOW STOP ME SOMEONE, ONCE I START AN ARGUMENT I CAN'T STOP BY MYSELF D:
"A lot of people become atheist for sentimental reason after period of suffering in their life." and "A person who claims he is an Atheist but does things such as burn churches as she suggests is not a true Atheist."
I (among many others) would not consider either of these people true Atheists. They may call themselves Atheists but they certain don't embody the "spirit", so to speak, of Atheism. They are not true Atheists. It's no different than someone who reads the bible once, doesn't understand it, and declares themself to be a Christian. They may call themselves Christian but are they actually? Would other Christians consider him to actually be a Christian?
"One of the main goal of going to church is to strengten and maintain faith. It's also a goal here, even if you'll certainly deny it."
Atheism doesn't run on faith I'm afraid. Try again.
"Here, are you fighting with logic, as you claimed before? Mmhhh, maybe a little, but I can perceive a little feeling here huh?"
Also, please state some sources in order to support this affirmation."
From the very beginning, Churches in medieval times scared people into converting through means of a horrific afterlife, an image of hell. This same tactic is still done today, all religions attempt to gain converts through fear and uncertainty. Religion is the greatest scam of all time.
The Church/Cult of Scientology is also such an example, look at how they've managed to fool so many people into parting with their money. You cannot deny their influence. And if you look to other Churches, you see the same thing.
And my prior statement was a simple observation, even you should be able to see how people are tricked and lured into becoming converts.
If I wanted to become rich, I'd start my own religion and con people into following it and giving me their money.
