The End of God?: A Horizon Guide to Science and Religion

Before I post the series Looking Through the Wormhole, I want to share this BBC Documentary first.

As the Pope ends his visit to Britain, historian Dr Thomas Dixon delves into the BBC's archive to explore the troubled relationship between religion and science. From the creationists of America to the physicists of the Large Hadron Collider, he traces the expansion of scientific knowledge and asks whether there is still room for god in the modern world.

The relationship between science and religion has been long and troubled: from the condemnation of Galileo by the Catholic Church in 17th century Italy, through the clashes between creationism and evolution in 20th century America, right up to recent claims that the universe does not need god.

Delving through the rich archive of programmes from Horizon and BBC Science, Thomas Dixon looks at what lies behind this difficult relationship. Using original footage from 1925, he tells the story of John Scopes, a Tennessee teacher who was tried for teaching evolution. He sees the connections between religion and American politics in the story of a more recent court case -- the trial of Intelligent Design. He looks at what happens when new scientific discoveries start to explain events that were once seen as the workings of god, and explains how some of our most famous scientists have seen god in the grandest laws of the universe. Finally, he finds intriguing evidence from brain science which hints that belief in god is here to stay.

Love BBC, their youtube vids are always professional with enough style to spark interest.

the higher ups would love to just remove god from out society.

Really? Hm, I always assumed that with enough time, religion would die out and be nothing more than a distant memory just like all prior religions.

I'll make sure to watch the rest of the videos after class.

I don't mind people who want to believe that God created the Universe, if that's what they want to think. What does annoy me is the ones that say because the Big Bang theory is just a theory, then it's not true and it must be God who created the Universe.

I kinda wish religion would be gone. I don't see it as a good thing. Even though its said that my country is 1# place with the most non-belivers I can say. It's actually a good thing. Our folk doens't fight over religion and over others beliefs a lot. I don't see a lot of problems over this. But maybe it has created a bit more of other knd of problems. I wonder what future brings tho.

Eh, not as interested in this one, I'm afraid. Don't care for religious discussion. I'll await for your "Through the wormhole" series instead. (Even though I seen almost all of them haha)

And to reply to your comment on your last post:
I knew most of the discoveries were educated guesses, and that's as far as I knew about our progress in space information. What I was taught in school was so minute, that while I realized we made a few more discoveries here and there, I did not know we had this much information on our solar system and distant galaxies. Thus, why I am so thankful for oyu showing me (and everyone else) the series, "How the Universe Works." :D
